Dr Emmeline Ledgerwood is an oral historian who conducts life story interviews for National Life Stories (NLS) at the British Library and co-ordinates the History of Parliament oral history project. She is currently working with NLS on developing the Discovering Science webpages for the British Library website. Her research interests include the twentieth-century history of science in Parliament and the British Library’s role in twentieth-century networks of knowledge exchange
‘We lost a type of job for a type of person in this country’: changing expectations of working in the UK scientific civil service
Many UK government research establishments were transformed by processes of organisational change during 1970–2005. This article explores the outcome of those processes by drawing on a series of original life story interviews with twenty former government scientists.
