Maggie Smith is a qualified nurse. As a lone parent she joined a Gingerbread group and was eventually employed as Day Care Officer for National Gingerbread where she established a workplace nursery for Bradford Council. Further roles included Director, Early Years Division, for Manchester Education Department and UK Director of Children’s Services for Barnardo’s. She was the first Head of OFSTED’s Early Years Division, Programme Manager for Bradford College, and has had extensive voluntary involvement in Saltaire. In 2014 she was appointed as trustee for Saltaire World Heritage Education Association where she manages the Saltaire Collection and spends time researching, and writing books, articles, and oral histories.
