William J Ashworth is Reader in History at the University of Liverpool. He is the author of three books: Customs and Excise: Trade, Production and Consumption, 1640–1845 (Oxford University Press, 2003); The Industrial Revolution: The State, Knowledge and Global Trade (Bloomsbury Academic Press, 2017); and The Trinity Circle: Anxiety, Intelligence, and Knowledge Creation in Nineteenth-Century England (Pittsburgh University Press, 2021).
